Understanding the IP rating system
The IP Code, or Ingress Protection rating, is used to specify the degree of protection against the intrusion of solid objects and liquids in electrical enclosures.
The first number refers to solid materials penetration like dust, sand, but also fingers and other solid objects. The second number refers to the level of protection against liquid intrusion.
For example, a product rated IP67 will be completely dust-tight and watertight under 1m of water for 30 minutes.
